Bodrum Castle
Bodrum Castle (Castle of St. Peter / Petronium) was built by the Knights of St John between 1406–1522 on a rocky peninsula between two harbors. Stones from the Mausoleion were used in its construction.
Its towers are known as the French, Italian, English, German and Spanish (Snake Tower). After Rhodes was taken in 1522, the knights left Bodrum in 1523.
The castle later served as a prison and was damaged during bombardments in 1915. Architectural highlights include double walls, gates with coats of arms, cisterns, a drawbridge, watch tower and the tughra of Sultan Mahmut II.
Today, Bodrum Castle is used as the Museum of Underwater Archaeology.
